Abhyanga

Abhyanga massage is a type of massage therapy which is used by practitioners of Ayurveda to treat their clients. The massage involves liberally covering the client in oil and then using smooth, gentle movements to rub the oil deeply into the body. The client lies completely unclothed, but covered on a table, and the massage therapist pours warmed and herbalized oil over his or her body, specially formulated for their physical and mental balance. The warm oil penetrates the tissues, loosening toxins from the cell and tissue structures. Traditionally, Abhyanga is often done by two therapist simultaneously in complete synchronicity and harmony. Abhyanga massage differs from many Western massage techniques in that it is not deep. It is meant to nourish the body with touch and rich oil, and while it certainly promotes healthy circulation and joints, it does not deeply penetrate the soft tissues of the body. It also draws out impurities, improves immunity by increasing lymphatic circulation. Abhyanga massage may also be paired with Shirodhara, however this treatment includes Nasya and Karana Purana. Afterwards you may want to take a shower.

The body of one who uses oil massage regularly does not become affected much even if subjected to accidental injuries, or strenuous work. By using oil massage daily, a person is endowed with pleasant touch, trimmed body parts and becomes strong, charming and least affected by old age.

Shirodhara

The Shirodhara treatment is fast becoming the most talked-about and most-requested Ayurvedic treatment offered by leading-edge health spas and alternative health practitioners. The word “shiro” means head and the word “dhara” means holding or pouring. This beautiful, profoundly relaxing treatment involves pouring slowly a continuous stream of warm oil over the forehead. Shirodhara is a powerful treatment for relieving mental stress and nervous tension. Shirodhara works primarily on the mental sheath or “manomaya kosha” as it is referred to in Ayurveda. It is here that the mind holds on to past impressions that create imbalanced desires and habitual patterns of behavior. These impressions are held captive in the limbic system of the emotional cortex of the brain. Source: The Encyclopedia of Ayurvedic Massage, Dr. John Douillard.

Indian Head massage

The effectiveness of Indian head massage, also known as Champissage (champi is an Indian word for head), is based on alternative medicine principles, specifically those surrounding energy flow, or chakras. It’s an ancient technique that Ayurvedic healers have been using for thousands of years, and it’s becoming more and more popular in the Western world.  This stimulating massage releases endorphins and promotes circulation. Warm oil will be applied to your head, neck and shoulders. This very relaxing treatment is used to relieve stress and tension and improves poor circulation, decreases stress, restores restful sleep and mental clarity.

Nasya

A thoroughly relaxing head, face, neck and shoulder treatment designed to open the upper body channels (srotas) and encourage lymphatic flow. Nasya clears the sinuses, enlivens your senses and relieves tension and congestion. This cleansing therapy is indicated for headaches, allergies and problems of the neck and head region. During this treatment up to 5 drops of medicated oil are administered to each nostril and head, face and neck receive a marma massage.

Marma Point Massage

A calming and balancing therapeutic massage focusing on pressure points (marmas), enhanced by medicated herbal oils and essential oils tailored for your body. It is applied in a special sequence. By stimulating the marma points, energetic and physical blocks are opened. Blocks can be caused by inadequate circulation, stress and improper diet. This treatment will make you more aware of your body-mind connection, leaving you feeling centered and grounded.

Marma Point Massage has been used for centuries in India to release toxins, stress, nervousness and muscular aches. These points correspond to internal organs and body systems and manipulation of these points helps to promote physical and mental wellness.

A reservoir is made from whole wheat flour and placed around the eye. Warm ghee (clarified butter) is gently poured inside, bathing the eye and surrounding tissues. As the ghee penetrates, the entire nervous system receives the therapeutic effects. Only one eye at a time is treated, so this treatment is scheduled on two consecutive days.
